Misc ramblings, rants, and raves by a midwestern boy who dreams of someday getting bigger.
Finally, back at work, time for some rest...
Ever have one of those 4 day weekends where you work much harder then you would have if you didn't have the time off? :)
Saturday was nice, we actually did take the day off from working on the house and went shopping. Didn't buy a whole lot, but we went through the Flea Market which was nice.
Yesterday, most of the day was spent putting up siding on the North. Even with all of that time, I didn't get it all done. Cutting the siding to match the slope of the roof really slowed things down. But 95% of the North side is done... I worked well past sunset, hammering by the moonlight.
Speaking of moonlight, there was a gorgeous moonrise last night. A nice big full moon.
This week, we are focusing on finishing up our masterbedroom and bathroom. We should have the bathroom ready to install fixtures by the weekend (which means it is painted and the tile floor is down). That leaves us to finish tear apart and rebuild the dining room the following week.
Wow.. time is really getting short!
Kitchen is almost done!!
Saturday, November 27, 2004
We have all but one cabinate installed (one was on backorder and Lowes called this morning to say it was in). All the countertop (except the eating bar) is installed, and the sink, dishwasher, and cooktop is installed. Next week, the double-oven will be installed. It is so incredible to have the kitchen basically be done. I still need to go around and put trim around the floor and windows... but wow!
Unfortunately, I was literally installing countertop when the appliciance installation crew arrived for the applicances, so I rushed and didn't do the best job. But, it still looks good!!
We were hoping to put up siding on the North today, but it is rainy and windy out. Tomorrow, it is supposed to be cooler, but sunny, so hopefully we can get it done then.
Leaking roof, kitchen floor, windy day from Hell
Wednesday, November 24, 2004
Well.. two nights ago, we replaced one of the windows upstairs... To do that, we ripped off all the old siding and covered it with house wrap, but our roof is leaking today. I am *hoping* that this stops when we get the new siding put up (slated for tomorrow morning).. but not pleasant.
Last night, we got 95% of the kitchen floor installed. We ran out of flooring (even after buying an extra box) and still have 1 1/2 strips left. Tonight, Uncle Ken is coming out to help us get our cabinates installed (hopefully, the weather won't keep him away).
On Friday, our stove top and dishwasher are scheduled to be installed and the double oven will be installed sometime next week (they had to order it).
It is really hard to believe that here in a couple of days, our kitchen will be finished. I am picking up counter-tops tonight (in the rain).
Speaking of rain, the wind is incredible... according to the weather bug at home, the wind is something like 30 mph, but I know that it is a lot stronger then that. I had to get up on the roof to try to fix the leak and the wind literally blew my bucket of nails off the roof and even bricks were having a hard time staying in place. It even blew over Broderick's wagon. it is also starting to snow... so we'll see how tomorrow turns out..
Taking one for the cause..

On Saturday, Lefty head-butted me in the eye (not being mean, he was nudging me and caught me wrong).
Anyway, word got around that I had a black-eye and of course, an editor needed a shot of a blck-eye for a book..so courtesy of HK... here is my picture. :)
Only 4 windows left!!!
Monday, November 22, 2004
Today, I replaced the North window in my old bedroom (on the NE side of the house) and tomorrow, I'll replace the East window. After that is done, that only leaves the one in the new laundary room and the 2 on the west end of the dining room (which will flank the fireplace).
Yesterday, we removed the north window in what will be the kids bathroom (now the laundary room) and I started to lay flooring in the kitchen.
Tomorrow night, I need to finish the floor in the kitchen as Uncle Ken is going to come out and we'll get our cabinates installed (yeah!!)
I had a very interesting conversation with Roger G today... we'll have to see if anything comes of it. ;)
Last minute change of plans, but still got a lot done..
Saturday, November 20, 2004
Trent decided not to come down this morning, which was a bummer, but we ended up getting a lot done. Holly has painted the entry-way on the East (we wanted to get things painted before putting down the floor). I ended up spending the day replacing the North window in the new Dining room. I found lots of flies and ladybugs that had been living in the siding there. Also, a lot of evidence of past water damage that Dad must have ceiled up.
That's another one of those big milestone things that is really good to have done. We've been putting it off for quite some time.
Holly figured out today that we have 5 weeks before our deadline. That means that we have to finish the kitchen and master bath next week. The master bedroom and start ripping apart the dining room ceiling the following. Replace the upstairs bath/laudary room and finish the family room the 4th week, and finally, finish the dining room the 5th week.
Tight schedule, but I think it can be done. I wish we had a crew of friends who could come out and help... it would make a huge difference if we had 1 or 2 extra people. Oh well.. :)
happy birthday to carrie, kitchen remodel nears end, plans for the weekend
Friday, November 19, 2004
First of all, I'd like to wish Carrie a Happy Birthday. Even though we aren't in DC to celebrate it!
The kitchen is almost done! We are starting to put the last coats of paint on tonight and tomorrow, we put down the floor and then start to install the cabinates. Our applicances will be delivered and installed next Friday (day after Thanksgiving). We built the island wall last night, which was the last thing left to do before putting down the flooring.
Once the floor is down and cabinates are installed, I want to focus on getting our bedroom/bathroom finished up this weekend. That will let us get our living room cleared out so that we can finish it up as well.
So weird that things seem to be falling into place!
Trent is talking of coming down this weekend, which would be wonderful. I figure he can help me lay floors.
LiquidGeneration + house update
Wednesday, November 17, 2004
This is a fun website that I just discoveredhttp://liquidgeneration.com/home.asp.
Also, just to update on the house, I opened up the doorway between the kitchen and the dining room last night. I've been putting it off for months and it took a whopping 3 1/2 hours. :)
It is now 9' wide and 7.5' tall
New updates... house stuff.. Carrie's last day, Aunt Geri
Tuesday, November 16, 2004
Man, I have been soo bad about making updates recently. Life's just too busy.
At work, I had a couple of weeks of calm and then last week, all hell broke loose on projects and it was super busy... but, that is the way it is!
Speaking of work, last week was Carrie's last day. It's been very strange not having her at breaks... we all went out last Friday to a couple of local bars and had a great time. I wish her all the best in DC. I hope she finds what she's looking for .
Everynight, we are working on the house. With Aunt Geri passing away, I wasn't able to get our bedroom completely drywalled, but the bathroom is mostly done. (Only the closet is left to drywall/build). Holly has been busy mudding the hallway, bathroom, bedroom, and living room. Tonight, I'll be widening the opening between the dining room and kitchen to make it about 9' feet wide. Once that is done, we can really focus on getting the kitchen finished.. We are so close, we really need to push and just get get it done.
I also finished the deck on the east and put up the storm door on the east. Next week, they will probably be coming out to replace the ceiling joists over the west end of the dining room, which means that we'll soon have heat upstairs! That also means that we can start closing up the dining room and put in the fireplace! The bad part is that I have to rip out our upstairs bathroom and laundry room this weekend.
I built the wall between the dining room and our bedroom and framed out the door. In our bedroom, I still need to put up the remaining drywall on the ceiling and hang drywall on the walls. Then build the closet and I am done. (2 nights of work).
We went to Aunt Geri's funeral on Sunday. It was good to see everyone... to bad it only happens for these bad things. :( It will be very strange to go down to her place and not have her in the kitchen.
Aunt Geri's passing, house updates, Bridget's birthday
Monday, November 08, 2004
My Aunt Geri (father's sister) passed away early this morning around 3 AM. She had been fighting cancer for the last couple of years. We went down to visit last night around 9 PM as we heard she wasn't doing well. Luckily, she passed pretty smoothly during the night... By far, she is our closest relative (along with her husband Uncle Dave) on the Barnhart side. They live about 1 mile South of us and have horses. They are really like another pair of grandparents to the kids.
On to good news, we've gotten a ton done this week. The rotten spot on the west wall was fixed, we bought our fireplace (although we can't install it until we fix the ceiling joists in the dining room), I plumped in the Master Bath and have the shower all installed.
We also put in the sliding door in the Master Bedroom right next to the hottub and put siding up. (Siding is now all done on the 'addition') Only the West wall and part of the North wall as well as the little area over the addition roof are left to side.
We purchased storm doors and installed the one on the west Sunday morning. Unfortunately, there was a strong Northerly wind on Sunday, so I couldn't work on the North windows or install the door on the East.
Oh! I finished up the deck on the East, finished the subfloor in the master bath and put up drywall on one side of the entry closet for the east door. The subfloor took a couple of hours as it spans the transition from the old house to the new house.
This week, I need to rebuild the wall that separates the dining room from our bedroom as well as build the wall that separates our bathroom from the bedroom and finish hanging drywall in our bedroom. With a little bit of luck, we might be ready to start mudding our bedroom/bathroom this weekend.
Bridget turned 9 yesterday, she is getting to be such a big girl.
